Hey everyone!
I am raising $2,600.00 to cover some MCAT preparation costs. Between mid January and mid March of 2025 I will be preparing for the MCAT-- a standardized 6.5 hours exam with 4 parts meant to test you on all manner of general science subjects and some critical reasoning skills. The score you get is weighed heavily in medical school exams. It is one (of many) unequal ways that medical school in the United States propagates itself-- and as would be expected, people with access to family wealth or wealth in general are able to pay for very expensive MCAT prep that costs in the thousands of dollars.
I have been chipping away at my science prerequisites for medical school since 2021 when I took Chem1A at Cabrillo. Since then I have completed chem 1A, 1B, organic chemistry plus the laboratory for 2 semesters, two semesters of biology, two semesters of physics, medical terminology, and biochemistry. I am also proudly a chemistry tutor at Cabrillo College It's been a slog! But I have learned so much, and I am better able to translate between scientific speech and every-day talk, and dare I say, I have become a blossoming little scientist. I will be applying to medical school in the 2025 medical school application cycle, and I plan on taking the MCAT in late March or early April. I hope to only take the test once and get the score I want the first time.
I have made this Go-Fund Me to ask for your humble support! I managed to be chosen for a scholarship for a Kaplan Test Prep ($2000 value), and I have qualified for the fee assistance program for the MCAT test. This takes the cost to take the test down from $300 to $140.00, and it provides me with free AAMC MCAT resources. This also covers medical school application costs for up to 20 schools! However, someone who will take this test and get a high score will also purchase a question bank through UWorld ($319.00 dollars) and will devote 40 hrs a week to studying :-/ lol... a full time job. I have already gone into significant debt to go back to school over the last 3 years, and am now deeply in debt to the federal gov. as I also cover gas, rent, and food not covered by food assistance. I am really grateful to friends and family and my partner Wesley who have supported me, but I could use a little more broadening of the network, so-to-speak.
So here is my ask:
319.00 for the UWorld Question Bank
140.00 for the test fee
1800.00 for roughly 2 months of rent.
that equals $2259.00 but let's call it $2600.00.
This will significantly help me feel like I can devote myself to studying for this test, which is nothing short of a marathon for the brain, and as such, I need to keep my physical body in good shape too to sit that long and have that kind of endurance. This money will help me feel more at ease and get me to the finish line, as well as help me work on my application (which I will be working on part time of studying).
Thanks for your support. I completely understand if you cannot! There are so many ppl in great need right now, and honestly I am fine so if this flops that's totally ok! Like the old Islamic proverb goes, "Trust in God, but tie up your camel", I am hoping to feel financially secure as I hunker down into this next part of the ever-exciting journey that has been getting into medical school later in life. I feel my ancestors are with me, every step of the way.
Hasta la victoria siempre,
