My name is Jon Bruton, and I am my brother Joe's sole caretaker here in Orange County, California. I am a professional woodworker by trade and have been by his side every day since a debilitating stroke in January 2008 changed the trajectory of both our lives. At the time, the medical staff began calling him "Miracle Joe" because the TYPE OF STROKE most often results in death.

Joe has been fighting and fighting these past 16 years or so and has regained some functionality since waking from months in a coma. He can now (mostly) speak, and on some days (with a cane and a lot of effort) can make his way out of bed and into the living room.

But the bottom line is: As we’ve gotten older (Joe is now 55 years old), more care is required. He cannot make it through the night without assistance (often as many as 6 times a night), he needs help in the bathroom, and overall requires a lot of assistance. Which has taken a toll on both he and I.

Overall, Joe’s disability is double vision, slower motor skills, difficulty walking any distance, and he has developed edema in his legs.

Although we qualify for some financial help (Social Security/home health care), I'm hopeful that this GoFundMe will be the next chapter in Miracle Joe's life. It is extremely difficult for me to ask for this help but I'm truly hopeful we can take Joe's rehabilitation efforts to the next level with your support.

Joe’s primary physician recently suggested that we seek additional physical therapy, nutrition and occupational therapy for motor skills - above and beyond what's currently covered.

All the while, my business as a carpenter has been slowing to a crawl. My reduced income coupled with rising costs and extra medical needs is the reason I am starting a Go Fund Me Page. That, and to obviously see my brother get the help and support he needs.
