Hello and thank you for reaching out in support of Amy Jaramillo Martinez.

Many of you know or remember Amy from working with her at Los Alamos National Laboratory where she was employed for over thirty-five years. Some may have community and school ties from the Northern New Mexico region of La Petaca, Mesa Vista High School, or Highlands University.

On Monday, July 24th, Amy collapsed, required CPR and was rushed to the local hospital, then airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Amy suffered a severe brain aneurysm rupture in the center of the brain and extensive bleeding in the brain. She had two surgeries the first night to stabilize her and the next day made it through a 7-hour surgery to repair the rupture. A traditional medical approach to repairing the rupture may have resulted in the loss of the right side of her brain or a life-threatening stroke. The surgical team, using an alternative method, performed a bypass of the rupture to allow blood flow to the right side of her brain and so far it has been successful. The surgeon and doctors said they see that she is a fighter and for the severity of the injury she is doing well. But we have been told the functionality, paralysis, and potential damage from the injury are still indeterminate.

Amy will be faced with several weeks in the Neurological ICU and several months of follow-up appointments and in-patient therapies for Speech, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy.

Your selfless contributions are needed. We are asking for financial assistance to help with associated medical expenses, temporary lodging, and to help with Amy’s overall recovery. We are already on day 6 in ICU and it goes without saying, the financial impact the family is incurring with the surgery and intensive medical treatments at this point is approaching over a quarter of a million dollars.

Although you will never hear them say it, helping others is what this wonderful family is all about. Whether it be advocating for families who have children with disabilities, participate and organize awareness events, food collection and distribution efforts, support their parish and archdiocese, or jumping in to help other when the need is seen or arises.

It is different this time, they are in a position where we can now help them with our generous support. They have always faced challenges with faith, strength, and a positive outlook. All of us pulling together can also help ease the financial burden that this family is already feeling with paying for hotels, cost of meals, and family members helping their sons come back and forth to Albuquerque.

Your continued prayers and support are very much appreciated and we thank you for keeping Amy and her family in prayer and well wishes.
