Help the Sha'ar Family

On Labor Day weekend, Mrs. Sha'ar prepared her husband's cap and gown for the convocation ceremonies at the local Claremont Colleges. But on September 3rd, 2018, a day before teaching his first class of the semester, Mr. Sha'ar died peacefully in his sleep. The bereaved widow, Mrs, Shaar, her family and the community mourn the unexpected loss of an energetic and caring husband, father, friend and scholar.

The Sha'ars hail from Aleppo, Syria. After two brushes with death from gunfire and rockets that destroyed their home, the Sha’ars decided that it was too dangerous to continue to live in their home country, and the family of seven adult children fled to different countries. Mr. Sha'ar had a PhD in engineering from England, and a distinguished career as a brilliant professor in Syria specializing in cryptography. His unique scholarship and talent was sought after and with the assistance of the Institute of International Education Scholar Rescue Fund, an American organization that supports scholars in war-torn countries, Mr. Sha'ar obtained a visa to teach at Harvey Mudd College. The Sha'ars arrived in Claremont, California just two years ago.

Mr. Adib Sha'ar was the sole financial provider for his wife. Without his income the upcoming months will be extremely difficult financially for his widow who has already endured much hardship. Two of her young adult sons are also in the United States and everyone in the family is determined to support their mother while they are all in the process of re-building careers and lives all over the world.  Additionally, Mr. Sha'ars death creates a legal nightmare for Mrs. Sha’ar’s asylum application as she cannot return to Syria or seek refuge in any other country. She is currently working with lawyers on updating her asylum status.

Mr. Sha’ar was a kind soul who helped students and other refugee families. My name is Judy Kohnen and I am a personal friend of the family here in Claremont, California. I set up this appeal for aid on behalf of Mrs. Sha’ar, Adib's widow, in conjunction with several of Mr. Sha’ar’s close friends. We are asking for a transitional, supplemental emergency fund to help with any legal fees, rent, and bills for her and her minor son in school.  All funds will go directly to Sawsan Shaar.

Please support the Sha’ar family as they mourn and work towards finding a new normal without their beloved father and provider.
