"We All Need Somebody to Lean On" #LeanOnUsKatie

Sadly cancer strikes once again.

Imagine yourself, 31 years old….what were you thinking about? What was going through your mind? Perhaps you were focusing on getting married and hopefully having kids after working your tail off in your 20’s dedicated to your career.

Were you thinking about cancer? I hope not.

Meet Katie Molchan:

She has been thinking about cancer a lot.

My family has known Katie her entire 31 years of life. I was the flower girl in her parents’ wedding at 5 years old! Her parents, Debbie and Dave Molchan have been lifelong friends of my parents and more like favorite Aunts and Uncles to my brothers and sister most of our lives. I used to babysit Katie and her sister Lauren when they were little, as well as “the crew” (my younger sister and brother and Katie and Lauren, and often a few others).   Our families spent so much time together at our house/their house; the pool; the local ski resort…you name it, our families were doing it then and doing it now – often, together!

What has Katie been busy doing in the past decade?

- She acquired a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Westminster College

- Juris Doctorate with a concentration in Health Law from Case Western Reserve University

- Licensed to practice law in three states

- Master of Bioethics from Case Western

- And, most recently, graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Healthcare Ethics from Duquesne University in December

Dr. Katie Molchan, Esquire accomplished the above and also opened, together with her fiancé Elaina, a successful small business in Lawrenceville, PA (a hot neighborhood in Pittsburgh) called Mixtape.

Unfortunately a few months ago, Katie noticed some changes in her body and started to go through some testing to see what was happening. Many things were ruled out, including various cancers… until one cancer wasn’t ruled out.

Approximately four weeks ago Katie got devastating news from the Doctor:

“You have Cervical Cancer.”

Imagine hearing those words at only age 31 before attempting motherhood. You had finally just graduated with your final degree, ready to begin making plans and starting your life, only to be told you have cancer a short three months later.

After several tests it was determined that Katie must undergo a radical hysterectomy that may be followed by chemo and radiation…tbt.

Katie has had to digest a firehose of information in the past few weeks:

Cancer, our small business?

Cancer, my student loans?

Cancer, my career?

Cancer, my loved ones?

Cancer, motherhood?

Cancer, life?

Friends and family often wonder how they can help.  We often feel helpless.  We want to offer comfort but don’t know how.

Cumulatively, between the expenses related to the numerous co-pays, deductibles, supplements and medicines that are above and beyond what is covered by insurance, coupled with the costs of buying organic foods, and the daily expenses and bills that keep coming despite her lost income, Katie will have approximately $10,000 worth of bills coming due this month alone.

Let’s help Katie not have this worry:

Cancer, medical bills?

Cancer, medical bills?

Cancer, medical bills?

This is at least one way we can help eliminate some anxiety for Katie and her family.

Let us all rally around Katie, Elaina, Debbie, Dave, and Lauren and share this Go Fund Me on your own pages so that at least we can help ease some of the burden of this devastating diagnosis.

I thank you in advance from the bottom on my heart for your donation.

Sincerely,

Tara Niesslein
