Bhatt's 2015 Fundraiser: SF CASA

Donation protected
I am fundraising for the San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). My goal this year is $1,500. Although GoFundMe takes a 5% cut, I will eat that cost and be sure to donate $1,500 in full. This money would go to SF CASA at http://www.sfcasa.org.

My friends and family have allowed me to raise over $2,500 for charity since 2012. In previous years my highest amount was about $1,000. I raised my goal to $1,500 this year because, as an attorney, I feel especially strongly about CASA’s vision to provide a safe, loving home for children.

CASA works toward its vision by sending volunteers to work with children lacking a stable environment. Abuse, neglect, incarceration of family members, and a number of other circumstances force children away from their parents and into foster care systems. A foster care child has social workers, foster care representatives, attorneys, and many other cast persons with competing interests and caseloads negotiating the child’s future.

In contrast, each CASA volunteer advocates solely for the child that is the subject of their case. He or she is a consistent adult presence in the child’s life until the child finds a stable home or matures into adulthood. After extensive training and background checks, the volunteer regularly meets with the child and learns the child’s educational, healthcare, and other needs. The volunteer then collaborates with and advocates for the child to those competing parties and to family law courts.

Of the many organizations you could support to help a child, CASA stands out as one that is truly hands on. Judges and attorneys love it. Kids need it. Your money will directly support projects including the following:

·        College applications for emancipated youth

·        Comprehensive background checks for CASA volunteers

·        Volunteer training on special education and case management

·        Recruitment of adults to advocate for children

·        Training for volunteers supporting LGBTQ youth

Deadline to donate: October 26. Like last year, I am shamelessly choosing my birthday to get last-minute donations if I fall short.

Donate for San Francisco CASA, because it's a donation that matters.
