Our solution to advancing girls' education does not involve buying notebooks and pencils.
Ours aims to be a sustainable solution to getting more girls educated in the most impoverished areas of our world, in the countryside of Haiti. The solution lies in water and electricity.
Take Naomi above. She, like many of her peers, are expected to fetch firewood, find water, and do many other chores that take so much time that her family expects her (over her brothers) to complete the work before going to school.
Fetching water can take hours out of a day.
When you do the research involving water access and extreme poverty, you see that if we solve the issue of clean water access, you begin to see these girls attending school with higher frequency.
Our solution is twofold: 1) Water Wells, 2) Electrify Schools
First, we build wells in villages where there isn't even a single well in short walking distance. Building wells means shifting how people prioritize time--it means more time these girls spend at school.
Second, we put simple, solar powered light systems in schools. When Naomi needs to work during the day, she can attend school in the evening after the sun has set (which always sets around 6). The problem is, there's no infrastructure to bring electricity into these schools after the sun has set. Having minimal light will simply allow these school programs to be run in the evening.
Our organization, Witness Inspire Act, is led by high schoolers and is dedicated to villages and contacts we have come to know personally. We have already built two wells and are in the process of electrifying one school with the funds we have. Our current funds run out after this.
Our goal with this GoFundMe is to electrify 1 school and build 2 wells.
