With the strength of an elephant Campaign

Philippa Davies is organizing this fundraiser to benefit Our Sam.

With the strength of an elephant, bereaved parents and families affected by pregnancy or baby loss silently carry their grief. Just like elephants, they don’t forget.

In 2020, I set up North Wales-based, baby loss charity, Our Sam, named after our daughter Sam was stillborn following a diagnosis of Edwards's Syndrome, or Trisomy 18 in January 2012.

Sam was one of five babies I lost, following a difficult journey, battling infertility as a result of polycystic ovarian syndrome, and ultimately one ovary, trying to achieve the ultimate goal and dream for my life, to become a mum. I wanted to set up Our Sam due to my struggles with mental health, including depression, anxiety and PTSD, following heartbreaking multiple losses and ultimate empty arms, and the difficulties I faced trying to access advice, guidance or support, a story sadly repeated by many.

I had two main aims for Our Sam

To raise awareness of the true impact of the loss of a pregnancy or baby for everyone involved to improve understanding and both personal and professional support in a field that still remains a taboo subject, despite the average loss of 1 in 4 pregnancies and babies between conception and 28 days post-birth.
To create a straightforward resource that would enable anyone affected to quickly identify the support they needed when they needed it most to reduce the chances of them developing severe, long-term mental health issues. Also, to provide a resource for all relevant professionals, to enable them to signpost anyone they support who may experience this heartbreaking loss.

So with those aims as our core, I developed Our Sam. In almost two years, even battling through Covid, we have exceeded my expectations.

With our vast growth, we now need to ask for your help and support.

For September, we have a Mammoth target, a huge pledge, and very special plans that you can get involved with to help us help bereaved parents and families receive the understanding they need, and the proper support, when they need it most.
