September 16, 2023, Justin DiCarlo and Christa Chastant discovered during a routine doctor’s appointment that their unborn child (Madilyn) has a 2-vessel umbilical cord, usually meaning something to do with her urinary tract. The doctor didn’t think it had anything to do with her heart. After a scan, doctors advised them to see a high-risk doctor because of her 2-vessel umbilical cord. After consulting with a high-risk doctor, he could not see what he needed to do, referring them to East Jefferson and Children's Hospital in New Orleans. That’s whenever their world turned upside down. After that appointment, they found out that she had a very rare heart condition, and her heart was completely upside down. Two vessels that go to each side of her heart are going to only one side of her heart, and she also has a hole in her heart. Two weeks later, at another appointment, they found out that she now has what they call hydrops, meaning there is a buildup of fluid around her heart and lungs. Doctors did not give them much hope. They went to New Orleans weekly, and doctors suspected she may be stillborn. If she survives delivery, doctors have prepared them that there is a very low chance of survival, and if so, it’ll be less than one year.

Madilyn was born prematurely on November 9, 2023, weighing 4lbs 13oz, at Touro Hospital, where she was then transferred to Children's Hospital in New Orleans. Madilyn is currently in the NICU at Children’s Hospital and is expected to have many surgeries soon; she is currently on a ventilator.

Due to these unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances, Christa has had to quit her job, and Justin, a Sergeant at the Franklinton Police Department, is limited in how much time he can work and take time off.
