Hey everybody! This is Liz, Sabrina, and Jessica. We are blessed to be some of Emmett's bonus aunties and we are raising funds for Katey and Emmett to help cover expenses related to his treatment, care, and other things that come up for the family.
Emmett has been feeling unwell off and on the last few weeks, but it didn't seem unusual for a toddler. A doctor's appointment was scheduled for May 17 for a check-up. Early that morning, Emmett woke up crying and was brought to the emergency room. He was diagnosed with B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Emmett was taken to Iowa City for continuing care. Emmett has had multiple transfusions to help his body heal, and a port was placed on Friday, May 19, to begin giving Emmett chemotherapy as soon as possible. Emmett was placed on a ventilator later that night. The family continues to wait for updates from the medical team about Emmett's condition and the next steps in his care plan.
Emmett is receiving care about an hour and a half away from home. When Emmett gets released from the hospital, he will need to receive weekly chemotherapy. Emmett will also be unable to attend daycare for the foreseeable future because of the inherent risk of exposure to illnesses in that setting.
We are raising funds to help Katey with medical expenses not covered by health insurance as well as rent, lost wages, fuel, hotel, and meals for people visiting Emmett now or helping with future transportation needs.
Update- 5/22/23
Thank you so much for your generosity through donations! We are so appreciative. We wanted to post an update on Emmett's current status. Papa Tim shared that Emmett was on a ventilator after experiencing something called TRALI, which is essentially an allergic reaction to the transfusions Emmett was receiving. Emmett was sedated through the weekend but was awake for a few hours today and communicating nonverbally! He is still on a ventilator but this was a good step! Emmett also began receiving chemotherapy over the weekend. We can't thank you enough for your donations and for your prayers and well wishes for the family.
Update 5/25:
Hi again! We wanted to provide another Emmett update. Emmett came off the ventilator on Tuesday. While he is still out of it, he is breathing on his own and is out of the PICU! Ti-Ti Heather is managing a Caring Bridge site for Emmett and providing regular medical updates there. There is also an in person benefit planned on Saturday, June 24, at Kuger's Feed and Drink in Evansdale, Iowa. More details can be found on the Facebook Event "Superheroes Unite for Emmett's Fight - Against Leukemia." There will be a silent auction and pool tourney with all proceeds going to support the family.
Thank you for supporting Katey, Emmett, Dane, and the rest of the family with us ❤️
