#MakeADifference for Mason

Over the years, the Kohler Co. PA Accounting department has done some AMAZING work to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society.  This year, instead of raising funds for the American Cancer Society, we are switching our focus to support a special little 8-year old boy named Mason from Cedar Grove and his fight against cancer.  All funds raised this year will be used to create a "Make a Wish" experience for Mason, as well as help offset the family's income loss and medical bills.  The battle Mason and his family face on a daily basis goes far beyond his treatments -- let's help carry this burden with them!

Mason's story is below.

Mason Deppiesse is a classmate and friend of Jackie Lukens' son Noah.  Back in January, Mason began to fall a lot.  As time went on, he seemed to have more problems with his balance and his coordination.  His 1st grade teacher started to notice his handwriting was changing.  It was very shaky looking and just not looking like it used to.  He began walking into the wall and into door frames.  His parents noticed that he was using his left hand for a lot of things including eating and brushing his teeth.  After taking him to his family doctor, he failed all the neuro tests and was sent to Children’s Hospital for an MRI.  On April 10, 2015, Mason was diagnosed with a brain tumor in his cerebellum.  He had the tumor removed April 17th.  Medical scans showed that he also had cancer cells in his spinal fluid.  They went forward with 12 weeks of radiation followed by 6 months of chemo.  Mason is such a trooper.  I look at how he reacts to everything he has to do and just think no adult would ever react this positively.  He goes with the flow and doesn’t fight his parents on the treatments.  Physically, he has had a very rough time through radiation, struggling with vision loss, extreme nausea, etc.  More recently after starting chemo, the doctors had to put in a feeding tube because Mason just couldn’t keep anything in his system.  Mason just celebrated his 8th birthday on October 19th.  On his birthday the doctors redid all the scans and his spinal fluid was clear of cancer cells.  The treatments are working!   Mason is currently halfway through chemo at this point, and should finish up just after Christmas.  Mason’s mother has not worked since his diagnosis, and just recently, was let go from her job.  Mason’s dad also struggles with health issues, a rare stomach disease, which has resulted in medical bills for this family even prior to Mason’s cancer.
