For over a year and a half my Mom and Dad were isolated and denied proper healthcare because they were bullied into going along with a family member's decisions on their behalf. It has been a heartbreaking situation--seeing them "warehoused" in a dirty, dark nursing home -- their whole lives being shrunk into a 9x12 room they shared.
Finally, in September, they had the courage to say they wanted to leave inspite of the bullying. So, on October 2, along with several amazing friends and many prayers, we showed up with a handicap accessible van and "broke" them out before they could be bullied and intimidated into just staying again.
In the 5 weeks they've been here in Champaign at an assisted living, I've spent many hours each day caring for them. And it's been an honor.
The betrayal by this family member continues. Their bank accounts have been emptied and she is asserting that they are incompetent.
But, they are strong and loving people. It has been amazing to watch them improve each day. They are among friends, and are receiving proper medical care. But, most importantly, the light is returning to their eyes.
I have to believe that things will eventually get worked out with their affairs. Right now they both desperately need hearing aids. They both are only able to hear 10%.
It's so important that they can hear and understand what is going on. To be able to have meaningful conversations and talk with loved ones...and each other.
Dad is a veteran of WWII. That gives him a small discount. But altogether, after the discount, I must come up with $8,000 to buy the hearing aids which are so vital to their quality of life. Please help make that happen.
