Winter Swimming for Celia Cross Greyhound Trust

The Celia Cross Greyhound Trust is a greyhound and lurcher rescue charity.  We have supported CCGT for nearly 20 years and have been lucky enough to give a happy home to several of its more eccentric hounds.  The charity will always answer the call for a hound in need and has gone to extraordinary lengths to rescue animals from unimaginable horror.  Once the dogs are rescued to safety, the CCGT kennels are, frankly, so warm and cosy that I wouldn’t mind a weekend break in there myself.  And they serve pilchards, which I love.

We have been very concerned over the last few months that, in common with so many small charities, CCGT has suffered from the cancellation of all of its normal fundraising activities.  So, for the first time ever, I’ve decided to set up a fundraiser to support the incredible and tireless work that the Manager, Jane, and her team do.

This year, I am taking part in the Polar Bear Challenge, which means swimming outdoors in a lake, river, the sea or unheated lido through the winter wearing nothing but a cossie, goggles and a standard latex swimming hat (International Ice Swimming Association rules).  The Gold Level requires me to complete a swim of at least 250m twice a month and a total of 5000m between now and the end of March when the Challenge concludes.  I hope to exceed those requirements by a considerable margin.  Water temperature is 10C at the start of November and is only going down from there!

Please be reassured that I am an experienced outdoor swimmer and know my own limits well.  I will not be taking any unreasonable risks or making demands on the resources of the emergency services.  That doesn't mean it doesn't still hurt, by the way!

I would be so grateful if you could sponsor my efforts in aid of the Celia Cross Greyhound Trust.  I will post regular updates of my suffering with pretty pictures of swimming locations for you to admire.  Thank you so much.

More information about Celia Cross Greyhound Trust: The Celia Cross Greyhound Trust rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes around 200 abandoned, sick or ill-treated Greyhounds and Lurchers each year. A registered charity since 1993, we are small, independent and rely entirely on the fundraising activities of our supporters. We aim to raise awareness about the kind and affectionate nature of the breed, to show that greyhounds and Lurchers make wonderful family pets.
