On Friday 12th December, I’ll find myself on the start line of the Winter Downs 100….a 100 mile (160km) trail race in the southeast of England covering parts of both the South and North Downs Way. (https://www.centurionrunning.com/races/winter-downs-100-2025). I’ll have 35 hours to complete it (though hope to do it quicker).

I’m not a complete stranger to ultramarathon running, though the recent cold snap has put a huge reality check and different feel to my final preparation. With just 3 aid stations across the whole route, there is a huge emphasis on self-sufficiency (navigation, kit, nutrition). A 2pm start time means that quite quickly you’re running in the dark and into the night which makes route finding quite interesting. Essentially this is a completely different challenge to other events I have done.

Whilst taking on anything significant in life, I always find it important to have a ‘why’ or a sense of purpose to revert to when faced with adversity. Consequently, for this adventure I am looking to raise money for Crisis (https://www.crisis.org.uk/). At this time of year more than ever, Crisis play a huge role in helping and providing the homeless with shelter and support……a warm, safe place to sleep and a hot meal. Things we all take for granted.

I have a choice to put myself through this likely discomfort. Whilst temporary, it is nothing like the day-to-day discomfort that many people sadly face.

As I take on this event, knowing that every step is helping raise vital funds for such a great cause really does make a massive difference when mental resolve will be seriously needed.
