Winston - our little fighter

Little fighter Winston was born with a rare brain disorder called Polymicrogyria, meaning that his brain has formed too many (poly), little (micro) brainfolds (gyria). This brain malformation is the underlying cause for Winston’s very rare and severe form of Epilepsy – Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy aka Ohtahara Syndrome, as well as Cerebral Palsy and most likely Cortical Visual Impairment.
 
Winston requires a nasogastric tube for feeding, needs oxygen at times and gets daily medications and various therapies to help him achieve the best possible life he can even though it might be shortened.

As a result of Winston’s condition and the need for round the clock care, Winston’s family is now reduced to living of one income with an increasing financial demand due to medical equipment, medications, therapies, respite care and just day to day costs like parking in the hospital.

Winston is part of a family of 6 having three beautiful bigger brothers (12, 10 and 3) who love him very much and who had to take a bit of a sidestep whilst mum and dad spend a lot of time in hospital with Winston (almost half of Winston’s life has been spent in hospital).

Donations will help the to pay for medications, therapies, respite care and most importantly take some of the worries away, so the main focus can be Winston’s wellbeing and quality of life.

Winston sleeps a lot due to his condition and due to the seizures, but when he feels relatively well, he shares the most beautiful smiles and we hope to capture as many as possible of them.
