Help 13-Week Puppy Winnie Fight Through Sudden Emergency Hospitalization

Hi everyone,

We are reaching out on behalf of my daughter Hailee, her husband Austin, and their sweet 13-week-old German Shepherd puppy, Winnie.

On Thursday afternoon, August 20th, Hailee and Austin came home from work to a pet owner’s absolute worst nightmare. They found little 20 lb Winnie covered in vomit, stool, and urine. She was breathing, but she was completely unresponsive to her surroundings and in severe distress.

They rushed her straight to the veterinary emergency hospital, where she was immediately admitted into critical 24/7 ICU care.

Because we don't know exactly what Winnie encountered or ingested, her medical team has been working round-the-clock to support her organs and stabilize her nervous system. The first 24 to 48 hours were a terrifying, minute-by-minute battle against life-threatening complications, but Winnie is showing us just how much of a fighter she is.

Against all odds, she has survived the initial critical window and is making steady, incremental gains, moving from completely unresponsive to swallowing soft food, reacting to Hailee and Austin’s voices, and sitting up with assistance from her care team.

Because her vision, balance, and coordination are still significantly delayed, her emergency vets are keeping her on continuous IV fluids and supportive care, and she may need a specialized veterinary neurology consultation on Monday to help figure out the root cause and ensure she makes a full recovery.

Multi-day emergency ICU hospitalization, continuous monitoring, IV therapies, and potential specialist consultations accumulate rapidly. Hailee and Austin are doing everything in their power to give Winnie every fighting chance, but the medical bills are mounting far beyond what any young couple can prepare for in an instant.
