In October of 2015, I reached out to the Theodore High School community to help in raising funds for the tuition fees for John Theuri Gacau. John’s mother passed away in 2012 due to HIV/AIDS related complications. John and his younger siblings were left under the care of their very old and poor grandmother.
At the time I reached out to Theodore High School, John was a 10th grade student at Othaya Boy’s High School in Kenya. He was at the point of dropping out of school due to family’s inability to pay academic fees.
The Theodore High School faculty, staff, and student body decided to support Theuri with his education.
Through the Theodore High School community’s help, we raised over US$ 2,500
(Kshs. 270,000), which was enough to pay the fees/balances and also pay, in advance, the fees for John Theuri’s 11th and 12th year tuition fees.
Through our help, John sat for KCSE in 2017 and attained a grade of B+, qualifying to join the Technical University of Mombasa.
Theodore High School continued supporting Theuri, sponsoring the project/fund that his tuition fees, rent, and food.
Theuri has now completed his 2nd year at the Technical University of Mombasa and has enrolled for his 3rd year.
The challenge he currently has is that learning is being done online due to the covid19 pandemic.
Unlike the US public schools, education and internet are not free; both are very expensive in Kenya.
In addition, due to the covid-19 pandemic Theodore High School was unable to hold a fundraiser in December of 2019 as had been the case since 2015.
In September 2020 I personally raised the money to cover the 2020-2021 tuition fees allowing Theuri to enroll in 3rd year. The challenge now is to raise money for his monthly up-keep; rent, food, internet, and personal expenses.
I am kindly requesting your support to help this very needy and bright student complete his degree.
I have started a go-fund–me page to try and raise funds towards Theuri’s education.
The target is to raise $5,000.
Thank you for your support.
