Reimagining Wine Culture: A Comparative Study of French and American Wine Culture

In October 2023, I am taking a leap of faith and moving to Paris to advance my wine education and provide solutions for the Wine Industry.

Hello, my name is Isis Daniel, 2021 Wine Enthusiast's 40 Under 40 Tastemaker, wine education content creator (12.2K followers on Instagram and 148.3K followers on TikTok), host of The Millennial Somm Podcast, and a certified WSET Level III wine professional and dedicated student pursuing the WSET Level IV Diploma in Paris, France.

I am deeply passionate about nurturing the evolution of wine culture and community. The decline in wine consumption and interest among young consumers in France and the United States has raised concerns within the industry. To address this, I propose conducting a comparative study on French and American wine culture, aiming to understand current wine cultures, identify influencing factors, and create a more inclusive and engaging wine culture.

I kindly request financial support for the WSET Level IV Wine Program and Reimagining Young Wine Culture: Case Study, as together we can reverse the decline in wine consumption and interest, shaping the future of the industry.

Conducting the Case Study:
I'll conduct a thorough review of existing research, then carry out surveys and interviews with young consumers in both countries. The data will be analyzed to identify similarities and differences between the two cultures, and used to develop recommendations for a more inclusive and engaging wine culture.

To accomplish the goal of understanding the current wine cultures in France and the US, here are five actions that can be taken:

  • Conduct Surveys and Interviews: Design and administer surveys to gather data on wine consumption habits, preferences, and attitudes among young people in both France and the US.

  • Analyze Market Research: Review existing market research reports and studies on wine consumption patterns and trends in France and the US.

  • Visit Wine Regions: Plan visits to key wine regions and young wine consumer communities in both France and the US to observe and experience firsthand the wine culture and practices.

  • Engage with Wine Communities: Actively participate in wine communities and events in both France and the US. This can include attending wine tastings, joining wine clubs, and participating in online wine forums and social media groups.

  • Analyze Social Media Data: Utilize social media listening tools to analyze conversations, trends, and sentiments related to wine among young people in France and the US. This will provide valuable insights into their preferences, interests, and behaviors regarding wine consumption.

In conclusion, conducting a comparative study on French and American wine culture is a crucial step towards nurturing the evolution of wine culture and community. By understanding the current wine cultures, identifying the factors influencing them, and exploring innovative approaches, we can reverse the decline in wine consumption and interest among young consumers. The overviews on wine entertainment and the references provided offer valuable insights and research findings that support the need for this study. As I embark on my journey to pursue the WSET Level IV Diploma at WiSP Campus-Paris, I seek sponsors who share my vision and are willing to support my wine education program and research over the next 2-3 years.

Together, we can create a more inclusive and engaging wine culture that celebrates tradition while embracing the evolving preferences and interests of young wine enthusiasts.
