Philly Thrive Mobilizes for A Transition of PES

Donation protected
DECEMBER UPDATE:

Thank you for your support of Philly Thrive.

It has been an amazing year. This fall alone, we have mobilized for all 6 mayor's refinery advisory group meetings, participated in Spiral Q's peoplehood parade, disrupted a Sunoco/Evergreen meeting to demand a meaningful public engagement process, and held a blockade outside of City Hall to send a message: we won't accept polluting industry on the former PES site.

This campaign is closed, but if you would still like to support our work, you can go to phillythrive.org/donate

Philly Thrive has been organizing for the Right to Breathe for four years, winning three grassroots campaigns for environmental justice. We were ready to step in after a fire and three major explosions rocked the PES oil refinery on June 21, holding a press conference at City Hall and a series of direct actions at the refinery in the days following. PES announced it would be closing on June 26. Residents living at the fenceline of the PES refinery, organized under Thrive, are poised to take on our most significant work to date: winning a transition of the refinery. We need you to back us.

Philly Thrive members are making history right now. Our members showed up powerfully at all six Mayor’s Refinery Advisory Group meetings in August and September, including hosting a powerful direct action at the final meeting. With the help of our supporters, Philly Thrive reached our initial goal of raising $1460, and we were able to provide pizza, water, buses, and t-shirts for our members at these public meetings, taking advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to win a transition of the East Coast’s largest and oldest oil refinery!

Philly Thrive members staged a die-in on September 25th Refinery Group Meeting, laying bare the choice the city of Philadelphia is faced with and the opportunity the RAG has to make recommendations that guide us towards future land uses that protect life and communities.

On October 6th, 8th, and 10th, Thrive members came together to learn and study, and on October 12th, we decided on our final strategy arc for the coming months, organizing to ensure that the refinery is not re-opened, the land on which the refinery stands is properly remediated, and our communities lead the visioning process for its future use.

Now, we're asking you to help us raise the additional resources we need to strengthen and stabilize our organization for the long haul. Philly Thrivers know we deserve better than a system that profits from illness and death, and we call for a transition that serves our communities.

Help us reach out goal of raising $4860, so we can host a major two day movement-wide Convention, providing our members with much-needed space to step back and reflect on our strategy and structure for the upcoming year. Our 2017 Convention tangibly advanced Thrive’s work.

With your help, we will win back the Right to Breathe for all Philadelphians, building a future with good clean jobs that sustain our communities. Thank you.
