On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, Wilson woke up with knee pain, which caused her to slightly limp and struggle a little to come downstairs. But, try as she might, she couldn’t figure out any specific instances from her Saturday soccer game where she would have hurt her knee. So, we attributed the pain to the fact that maybe she awkwardly twisted her knee while she was sleeping or something else innocuous that we were missing. Wilson went off to school for the day, where the limping got progressively worse and she struggled to walk up and down the stairs at school. By the time Mom picked Wilson up after school, it was clear that Wilson was in pain. Then, when Wilson stood up to leave, Mom noticed that her thigh was swollen and her left thigh definitely looked bigger than her right thigh. Mom decided to take her to Phoenix Children’s Hospital Urgent Care to have it examined. But, they were unable to make a definitive diagnosis. So, Mom and Dad decided to take her to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for further evaluation. Once there, she was seen by the usual team of doctors and multiple tests were ordered. After the bloodwork, X-ray, and MRI results were evaluated, a doctor came in and told Mom and Wilson that she had a large mass in her thigh and that it was most likely cancer. Many, many tears were shed by Wilson and our entire family and more tests and procedures were ordered to determine what type of cancer had a hold of Wilson and whether the cancer had visually spread anywhere else in her body. Wilson’s diagnosis, Ewing Sarcoma. Wilson is a club soccer player. So now instead of fighting on the soccer field for the ball and protecting her goal, she’s fighting for her life and protecting her body from this nasty cancer, from the spread of the cancer, and any further reoccurring cancer.
