American Turners of Delaware: A New Chapter
American Turners of Delaware has been a large part of the Wilmington community for over 160 years. Over this time the society’s presence has waxed and waned, but today American Turners of Delaware wants to start a new chapter.
The time has come to refocus on what it means to be an American Turner. A recommitment to the phrase "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body" is our inspiration. It is written in our bylaws that the society is organized for the purpose of advancing the health, happiness, and progress of mankind.
Our bylaws state the this is accomplished through:
A. Planned programs of health and physical education for the development of a sound body.
B. Planned programs of cultural education for the development of a sound mind.
C. Planned recreational and social programs for all members of the family group.
D. Participation in worthy civic projects, both local and national.
We have a long journey ahead of us, but starting today, American Turners of Delaware is recommitting to being a pillar in the community once again.
However, it all starts with the renovation of our facility. Last year we celebrated our 100th anniversary of residing in our building, which was built in the 1800s, and is in need of many updates and repairs - so much that the entire 2nd and 3rd floor are unusable. However, with a relatively small investment in the renovation of these floors, and the conversion of these rooms into offices for small businesses, we will be able to create a revenue that will allow us to thrive for many more decades and centuries to come.
With an increase in revenue comes an increase in capacity. New features, amenities, and priorities that we hope to incorporate over the coming years include a community garden , a pickleball league, an outdoor event space, exercise classes such as yoga, HIIT, and zumba, daytime office space for small businesses and affordable event space, conference rooms, and a food commissary. And of course the gym and Rathskeller Bar will continue to remain fully operational with upgrades over the next few years.
These are both uncertain and exciting times, and we look forward to seeing our community grow. Thank you for sticking with us through all of this. Your financial and emotional investment in this community, which means so much to us all, will allow us to thrive for another 160 years.
Sincerely,
Your Friends at American Turners of Delaware
