This is William Gwinn's story & the beginning of the life changing disease that he & his family are now facing.
During life, when you're least expecting it, you cross paths with a person that will forever change your perspective & appreciation for the life you've been given. 5 days ago, that happened to me.
I met an adorable little boy named William Gwinn & his amazing family at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI. He was my sons roommate after we were admitted due to complications from strep throat.
Will had been at the hospital for 5 days by then & despite numerous testing (some invasive & very scary to an 8 yr old) specialists were still unable to come up with a definitive diagnosis. Will was suffering from blurry vision, headaches & lesions on his spine.
On Thursday, January 28th, 2016, a week & 1 day since Will was admitted, the doctors came back with a diagnosis. Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO). An incurable demyelinating disorder related to MS. It's an auto immune disease in which his immune system cells & antibodies attack myelin cells, a fatty substance that surrounds the optic nerve fibers & his spinal cord & destroys them. 50% of people with this devastating disease will suffer paralysis and/or blindness within 5 years of being diagnosed.
Starting this week, William will be going back & forth from Hasbro for weekly infusions. After that, he will go to Mass General Hospital in Boston to participate in a funded research program for children with conditions like his.
Wills mother, Danielle, is one of the sweetest & happiest people I've ever met. Her optimism & positive attitude is both infectious & inspiring. I only spent 2 days with this family, but even after such a short time, meeting them changed my perspective & attitude towards my life & my family's.
The donations from this page will help to go towards getting Will as healthy as possible. Whether it's gas to go back & forth for treatments, helping pay bills so Danielle can focus solely on Wills health & keep some financial burdens at bay etc. This wonderful family is about to start down a bit whole new life path that will require both support, love & prayers for many years to come.
