Will's Recovery from West Nile Encephalitis

On September 20, 2023, our lives changed for the worse and we didn't even know it yet. William started showing symptoms of the flu, including body aches, headache, and fever. By Friday, the 22nd, I convinced him to go to Urgent Care, where they tested him for flu, Covid, and Strep. All were negative, so they suggested we go to the Emergency Room. They ran several test and found that he had an abscessed tooth, so they sent him home with antibiotics. By that night, he was no longer able to walk, so I called an ambulance to take him to the hospital. After seeing his discharge papers from the ER visit that day, we all concluded that he stay home. By the next night, things got worse, so I called an ambulance again. They took him to the hospital, and he was admitted, knowing there was something serious going on. They tested him for everything. At this point they knew he had encephalitis (swelling of the brain) but couldn't figure out what caused it. Fast forward several days, the diagnosis finally came. It was a severe case of West Nile Virus. At this point, we weren't sure if he was going to survive. His eyes were tremoring, his body was convulsing, he was incredibly confused and agitated, he had forgotten who I was, and he was calling for his mom, who passed away years ago. And the worst part is there is no treatment for West Nile Virus. It just has to run its course. Fast forward to today. At this point he's been in the hospital 2 weeks. He has lost over 25 pounds. He has a feeding tube directly to his stomach. He has a picc IV directly to his heart. He can't eat or drink. He still can't walk. He has trouble talking. And he is still shaking. All that aside, he is improving from where he was. I think the worst is over. Now we are waiting on approval to go to a neuro rehab in Houston, where they specialize in helping West Nile encephalitis patients recover. He will be there 2 to 3 weeks, but even when he leaves he will still need additional therapy to fully recover. He's going to make it, but he's out of work, as am I to help him get the best treatment available to him. This could take up to a year to recover, and some symptoms may never go away. To think a mosquito bite did this to him is insane. But I have high hopes and most importantly faith in God that he will indeed make a full recovery. I just don't know how long that will take. I humbly stand before my friends asking for financial help for the medical bills, lack of income, traveling back and forth, parking, meals while I'm in Houston, and all unforseen costs that I can't think of right now. Thank you in advanced for the support, both financially and mentally. It takes an army, and luckily I have one.
