Willis Veluz-Abraham Memorial Scholarship
Donation protected
In remembrance of Willis Veluz-Abraham's life, a scholarship is being established in his name at UCLA. Willis studied English and was very engaged student life, participating in sports, student government, and various student organization efforts. Because of his love for cycling, Willis spent some time riding his bike with the UCLA Cycling Team. However, most of his college days were spent on the 3rd floor of Kerkhoff Hall Cultural Affairs Commission Office planning concerts and cultural events that brought people together. He became the director of Jazz-Reggae Festival, one of UCLA's largest and longest-running cultural programs in 1991. He was elected Cultural Affairs Commissioner in 1992, earning a seat on the Undergraduate Student Association Council. After graduating from UCLA, Willis continued his work in the community, co-directing the College-4-Everyone program at Our Lady of Peace Church (OLP) in North Hills to prepare high school students for higher education through biweekly workshops and college tours. He also helped oversee the church's youth summer camp and youth leadership team. He regularly volunteered at his son Ajani's elementary school, lending a hand with beautification projects, school events and fundraising initiatives. Willis became an integral member Kayamanan Ng Lahi Philippine Folk Arts by becoming the cultural group's designated stage manager and technical lead during major shows and road trips. He was the KNL's biggest fan. He continued cycling as an adult, biking on routes throughout the city, making many friends along the way, and joining a group called the Streetgliders.
Willis embraced life and all the people that he met. He will always be remembered as a kind, gentle, compassionate person with a warm smile and genuine care for others. Willis touched the lives of so many people through his acts of service and love. We hope Willis's spirit can live on through this UCLA scholarship by supporting students with financial need who exemplify leadership and service in their communities. Thank you in advance for your generous donation to this effort.
