Hi everyone I am fundraising for my friend Willie Watts to help pay for his recent attorney fees so that he can appeal his recent denial from the parole board after spending 42 years in Florida prisons. Willie was sentenced back in 1981 as a adolescent. His sentence then would have equaled life in prison. Since then the Federal government has declared that to be unconstitutional and anyone with a sentence like that could go to court and be resentenced. So 4 years ago Willie was resentenced in Putnam Co. Fl. to 40 yrs instead of 75 yrs. He also appeared before a judge in St Johns Co, witch didn’t go well. The Judge there did not cut his sentence. If that would have happened Willie would have been released with time served.
I worked in New York State Dept of Corrections as a counselor for 18 yrs and interviewed and read hundreds of cases and truly believe if Willie had committed the same crimes in New York he would have been released many years ago.
I met Willie 8 yrs ago while volunteering at Tomoka Correctional Institute in their Horizon program. I was really impressed with how Willie had changed his life and how he continues to work on character building to become the man he was destined to be. My hope is that this fund raiser can be a way to help another man to some day become free.
