Willie (JB) Burks' appeal fund
Donation protected
My name is Willie Burks. I'm a former Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) employee that was recently convicted of deprivation of rights under color of law, in violation of l8 U.S.C . Section 242, for failing to intervene an assault on an inmate committed by another former ADOC employee on February of 2019. I was found guilty in July of 2021 and sentenced to 9 years confinement in federal prison on February 4th, 2022. The funds being raised is for my appeal defense as I was sentenced too harshly. I never laid a hand on anyone! I was merely present, and according to the prosecution did not do enough to intervene; even though I gave a verbal command to the offender to stop the assault that I witnessed. We all know there are other former law enforcement officers currently walking free that are guilty of much more heinous crimes and did not serve a day in prison. I'm a victim of a much greater crusade, while I can appreciate the Federal Government's efforts to "clean up" Alabama's prison woes, I do not wish to be the scape goat of this herculean effort by the Alabama Department of Corrections and the United States Department of Justice. I've been terminated from a 17-year career in corrections. I'm a husband and father, I have elderly parents whose health is failing that depend on me to get to their appointments. It is imperative that I not go away for such an unjust long period of time. My family needs me. I'm a productive member of society working full time and have never been in trouble a day in my life. I come from a rural town in Southeast Alabama. I have the utmost moral character instilled in me by my parents and by my proverbial village. I'm asking that anyone that can and is willing to contribute to my defense expenses please do so. I'm confident that I will overcome this injustice with your help. Thank you in advance!
