William's Will To Live

Donation protected
William Peter Tiesler was expected to be born in February 2020, Sophie was scheduled to choose her c-section date the week of Christmas. But, early in the morning on Thursday, December 19, William decided it was time. (Fun fact, Sophie was 9cm dilated on arrival- she is a rockstar!)

At 6:13am that morning, by emergency c-section, weighing 3lbs 14oz, 17” in length, William Peter Tiesler entered the world... 7 weeks early. Based on prior appointments, Sophie and Paul knew William had a few concerns surrounding his organ development, but most critical is that he is missing a kidney.  Unfortunately, the one he has is multi-cystic and only functioning at about 10%.

William must receive dialysis, however both peritoneal dialysis and hemo-dialysis are not yet options. Will’s abdomen must first sufficiently heal from his surgery he had at 3 days old (32 weeks, technically) and his small size and weight are currently limiting factors. Will must gain weight which is challenging given his previous intestinal surgery. In addition to dialysis he will also ultimately need a separate surgery to reconnect his damaged intestines. During all of this time, Will’s tiny functioning kidney needs to keep his system filtered. The ultimate goal is to receive a Kidney Transplant.

Fourteen days old, he is now about 5lbs, one surgery down, and he is fighting very, very hard.  His mother and father sit by his side every day, reading to him, talking to him, singing to him. While they have medical insurance through Paul’s work, the reality exists that this will be a long, emotional, and expensive journey.  It is estimated that William will remain in the NICU for at least 3 months. They don’t yet know the reality of the cost for his miraculous care.

For this reason, we have started this GoFundMe Account. They hit their 2019 deductible, which quickly reset on January 1st for 2020.  Parking and transportation from Norwalk to New Haven adds up quickly, and donations for Ronald McDonald House are also recommended when they get off the waitlist. It is unknown how costly the eventual transplant will be, but anti-rejection drugs after a kidney transplant is currently estimated at $17k annually, to give some data points.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help William with his medical needs.  If, by a miracle, we raise more than is immediately needed, we will set up a college savings fund for Will.  ALL of this money will go towards Will’s care. *** As of 1/4/2019 we are doubling the goal to $40,000 as we begin to understand a little better how many procedures William will need to survive.***

Those who know Sophie and Paul know they are a very special couple. They are enormously loving, friend-centric, positive people. Please consider sharing their story and help them concentrate all of their love and strength on their magnificent son.
