I’m making this go fund me for my grandson William. As some of you may already know, he is currently in critical condition in the ICU at Helen Devos Childrens Hospital. He started showing flu like symptoms about 5-6 days ago he had a mild fever, decreased appetite and only wanted to sleep for 2 days straight. His parents assumed it was a common flu/bug of some type and didn’t think too much of it and just put him in bed with them so they could comfort and monitor him until he got better. They woke up in the middle of the night early on Saturday to find him unconscious laying in a pool of his own blood. He was bleeding profusely from his nose. They rushed him to the emergency room and got immediately transferred to Helen devos. The doctors then discovered that he had an infection that was destroying his blood cells and attacking his organs. His kidneys and liver were failing and he was extremely anemic and in danger of bleeding out and the doctors were puzzled. The first day William went through an array of tests and blood transfusions and we were told that there was a very real chance that he would not make it through the night as his kidneys were about to shut down and his blood work was almost as bad as it could be. He made it through the night and is still fighting, although his condition has not improved much and he remains very critical. Over the last couple of days william has undergone several more blood transfusions and more tests than we could count. As of today the last I spoke to mom and dad he was scheduled for a bone marrow biopsy to test for cancer, specifically leukemia. The doctors believe he has a very rare liver disease called atypical HUS which is a very serious disease that causes your body to destroy your blood cells and causes serious liver damage. They believe it might have been brought on by some form of cancer, genetic mutation or another Disease of some type. They are still working on figuring out the cause but as of now they are going to start treating the aHUS while they wait for the other results to see if he has another serious disease as well. His mother and father Jake and Sadie have been by his side every moment since he got sick. Sadie is a stay at home mom of 3 and Jake is a truck driver who is currently staying home from work to be with William. They have been in the hospital for 3 days now and are most likely going to be there for at least another couple of weeks. We all know that hospital stays are extremely expensive and with dad not being at work to be with William he isn’t going to have an income while he’s off work. They have 2 other children that they are still having to provide for and a household to maintain while their son is fighting for his life in the hospital. They don’t know that I’m planning on doing this for them and they have refused help from most of us because they don’t want to be a burden. I’m hoping to help them with the upcoming expenses of having to stay in the hospital for at least a few weeks and with the continued treatment will need after he is released god willing. Atypical HUS is very likely a lifelong disease that will require treatment every 2-4 weeks for bare minimum a few years and likely could last the rest of Williams life with increased chance of kidney failure and organ damage. That means they will have to make regular trips to the childrens hospital even after they are released at least for the foreseeable future. William has a long road ahead of him and the only thing that’s been bringing him any comfort has been having mom and dad by his side throughout this terrifying experience. We’re asking anyone who is willing to pray for our grandson and his family as they try to navigate the biggest tragedy their family has ever had to experience. Any donations will be put towards any expenses of the hospital stay, taking care of Williams siblings while they are away from mom and dad, any future expenses related to treatment and anything to help William recover and make him more comfortable and happy. Thank you all for just taking the time to read this and for all the prayers and to everyone who has reached out so far. I will keep giving everyone regular updates as I get them from mom and dad. It takes a village and we appreciate each and every one of you.
