On August 11, 2020 my son William Downs was in a horrifying motorcycle accident which left him paralyzed from the waist down. This tragic accident claimed the life of his wonderful young girlfriend and has left Will’s life forever changed.
Will at 24, was starting to get his life together. He and his girlfriend were in the process of getting their own place so they could better care for his younger brother, who is blind and autistic. Will is a great big brother and has always felt that it was his duty to care for his younger brother. In the past, he has worked with disabled children in order to learn how to best care for the disabled. Now he has his own disability.
Will sustained many injuries including many broken ribs, damage to his skin, a collapsed lung, T2-T3 fracture dislocation, and the burst of his T3 vertebrae. Of these injuries the most devastating injury severed Will’s spinal cord. After 2 weeks in critical care at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Medical Center he is now alert and on the road to recovery.
If you know Will, you know he loves life. He excelled in all sports and continued to play basketball every day when possible. He loves music, writes lyrics, and records when he can. He is charismatic, kind, generous, and loves children. You also know, Will is a fighter. For this battle he will need the support of is community. Will has a long and difficulty journey ahead of him ; today we turn to our friends and family to ask for help.
The funds raised through this campaign will be used to pay for hospital bills, physical therapy, and necessary items such as a wheelchair and a wheelchair accessible vehicle. We are also looking into new procedures, medical research testing, and other trials which might help restore Will’s spine.
We are so thankful for all the love and concern our community has shown for our family during this time. The out pouring of love and concern from all over the country is overwhelming. To those who have reached out to help and to those who continuously pray for Will, we thank you. We are truly blessed we can’t thank you enough. His brothers, his sister, and I appreciate everything that has been done to support us through this horror.
As I have been saying "Where there's a 'WILL there's a WAY !" I know my son will continue to fight, he will be strong, and will go on to have a meaningful life no matter which way GOD decides he must go on. With our help I know he will ROCK his recovery and overcome this just like the many other obstacles he has overcome in his young life.
