Help Wilfredo Get a Car with Hand Controls

I am writing this letter in the hope that you can help fund Wilfredo Melendez Jr., who is desperately in need of a new or used car with hand controls. He was born with cerebral palsy, and his doctor said that he would never walk, talk, or do anything for himself. He was told he would need lifelong care and that I should place him in an institution. As his mother, I refused to accept that. I pushed him to learn how to feed himself, walk in the best way he could, and survive life.

Wilfredo went on to graduate college and is now a software engineer — an incredible accomplishment for anyone, let alone someone with a disability. He works hard to support his four children. However, his current vehicle, which is a 2005 Dodge, has hand controls but is no longer reliable. The car has had frequent breakdowns, and after paying over $3,000 in repairs, it broke down again. The mechanic said it might be an electrical issue, but they couldn’t figure it out, and they don’t specialize in electrical work. Wilfredo needs a safe, reliable car that fits his needs and can get him to work without constant worry.

His income, although enough to provide for his children, means he no longer qualifies for Social Security or Medicare. Now, Wilfredo is relying on the help of friends for transportation, but that isn’t sustainable. We are asking for your help to buy a reliable car with hand controls, which will enable Wilfredo to continue working, supporting his children, and living an independent life.
