Hi, I’m Katy. I’ve been a wildlife rehabilitator for 8 years now, and every spring/summer I take in sick, injured, and orphaned birds that quite literally wouldn’t make it otherwise.
Baby season is here. Again. And it does not mess around. My first official bird of the season is Pipkin the blackbird ❤️
Last year? 89 birds.
This year? Looking worse.
Swifts, swallows, house martins are all declining rapidly in the UK and end up in care exhausted, starving, or grounded. They need feeding constantly (we’re talking every 30–60 minutes at peak), specialist diets, heat support… and yes, an eye-watering amount of insects.
This is where it gets real:
• It can cost £50+ a week just on bugs at peak season
• A single swift costs around £15 per week to feed (minimum!)
• And that’s before general supplies, housing, and emergency vet care etc.
Last year I came dangerously close to closing admissions because I simply couldn’t afford to keep going. I don’t want to be in that position again, especially when these species need all the help they can get.
So this year, I’m aiming to raise £1,000 - £1,500 to cover the absolute basics and keep the doors open as the chaos hits.
If you can spare £5, it genuinely makes a difference.
If you can’t, sharing this helps more than you think.
Every single donation = more birds fed, warmed, and given a second chance to get back into the wild where they belong.
Thanks for anything you can contribute! Whether it's a £1 or a share, it's all so much appreciated!
Katy
