We were were told to "Be the Change you want to See in the World."
Coupled with our passion for food, we were inspired to explore a extreme niche of sustainable agriculture:
Instead of using pesticides, fungicides (even those allowed in "organic" agriculture), petroleum-fueled tractors, and plastic drip-tape, we try to find methods more indigenous to the planet Earth. As a wildfarm, we install Bird Houses and Bat Boxes for pest management; we plant polycultures high in medicinal herbs to deter pests and the spread of disease; we install Bee Houses and Pollinator Islands for increased crop yield; we plant in Sunken Basins and water using ancient techniques-- everything else we dig or do by hand.
Doing everything by hand and on our own has been wonderful and very, very slow. When we started-out, we had saved a decent budget to drill a well, build a small off-grid cob casita and get started on the farm (aquiring plants and animals and whatnot). To make a very long and rather uneventful story short: the well ended-up being 5 times deeper than anticipated--destroying the entire budget we had put together plus putting us in debt way past the mortgage.
In an effort to keep the farm and make any progress on it, we have had to maintain jobs off the farm--with a 2-hour roundtrip commute. This means that we have had very little time to progress with the farm itself. We are asking for help so that we can get more time to dedicate to improving the farm.
As we move forward we will be able to host many workshops to help others with a similar vision of sustainability: earth building, arid-adapted agricultural techniques, creating crucial habitat and integrating wildlife species into a farm setting, biodynamic soil amendments, etc. We are making this vision a reality, but we need your help.
