Please help to support Annie's recovery
For years, our daughter, Annie, has suffered from numerous psychiatric problems, including PANDAS/PANS, a neuropsychiatric autoimmune disorder caused by bacterial infections. She has been through what seem like countless courses of treatment, and she has been prescribed countless drugs.
For much of the past year, Annie has been too unwell to go to school . In February, after two emergency-room visits, she spent nine days in a psychiatric hospital. Annie has so many great qualities: creativity, humor, curiosity, kindness, intelligence. But those qualities are being buried by her pain and her struggles. Many nights, she fights going to sleep because it is too hard for her to be conscious during the days.
The standard of care for kids like Annie—and her best chance at a healthy, happy, normal adolescence and adulthood—is wilderness therapy. This is a program in which, for eight to twelve weeks, Annie will receive wraparound care in a nurturing environment, among kids with similar problems. We applied for a program called Trails, in North Carolina, and Annie was accepted. She began on July 20, not long after her thirteenth birthday.
This is a painful move in many ways. It is also unbearably costly. As you likely know, quality mental health care is very hard to come by in the United States, and, more often than not, it is not covered by insurance. Mental illness is simply not treated with the same dire seriousness as physical illness. Years of psychiatrists, therapists, psychologists, and doctors have depleted our savings. Ten weeks of wilderness therapy costs more than $60,000, not including testing, transport, and other fees.
We need your help. We wouldn’t be asking unless it was absolutely necessary, and unless we sincerely believed that this move could save Annie’s life. All donated money will go toward Annie's treatment at Trails. Thank you!
