Help Save Dino the Heron – Emergency Surgery Appeal

On Thursday 22nd October, our rescue received a call about a grey heron who desperately needed help. He had suffered a devastating injury to his eye, leaving him vulnerable, in pain and in urgent need of veterinary attention. Within an hour of receiving that call, one of our incredible volunteer responders, Sam, had located him and transported him to the vets.
We named him Dino, short for Dinosaur, because of his wonderfully prehistoric appearance. But behind that funny little name is an animal facing an incredibly uncertain future.
Following his emergency veterinary assessment, we received the heartbreaking news that Dino’s injured eye could not be saved. He requires surgery to remove it, and the estimated cost of his operation, follow up appointments and rehabilitation is approximately £1,500.
For a small, volunteer run rescue like ours, finding that amount of money in a matter of days is an enormous challenge. But how could we look at this beautiful bird, knowing that veterinary treatment could give him a chance, and not at least try?
Dino is currently in our care, receiving medication, pain relief, food and a safe place to rest while we prepare for his surgery. Despite everything he’s been through, he’s still showing us signs of strength. He stands, walks, stretches his wings and continues to fight. We don’t yet know what Dino’s future will look like. His eyesight and ability to survive independently are serious concerns, and even if he makes it through surgery, there is no guarantee that he’ll ever be able to return to the wild. His welfare and quality of life will always come first, and we’ll continue working closely with our veterinary team to make the right decisions for him. But right now, he is here. He is alive. And he deserves every appropriate opportunity we can give him. That’s why we’re asking for your help. Wild Coast Colubrids Reptile & Wildlife Rescue is a small rescue based in Cornwall, run by people who dedicate their time, homes and resources to animals in need. We have already funded Dino’s initial emergency veterinary care, but we simply cannot cover the next stage alone. Our goal is to raise £1,500 to help fund his operation, veterinary follow-up care and rehabilitation.
Of course, we know not everyone is in a position to donate, and that’s okay. Sharing Dino’s story is just as appreciated.
As the founder of this rescue, I know we cannot save every animal that comes through our doors. Sometimes, despite everything we do, nature and circumstances have other plans. But I also know that we have to try when there is a genuine chance to help. Dino has already survived his injury and made it into the safety of our rescue. Now he needs a community behind him. Please, if you can spare even £1, help us give Dino the best possible chance. Every donation, every share and every kind word means more than you could ever imagine. Thank you for helping us fight for a bird who cannot ask for help himself.

 With love and gratitude
