Hi Everyone! My name is Kara Costello and I'm starting this fundraiser on behalf of Abby Arroyo. As many of you know, Abby was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ewing's Sarcoma in her Liver, Stomach and 3 lymph nodes back in February of this year. A week after her diagnosis, she started her aggressive chemo treatments. Treatments have been going as well as all of us have hoped and prayed for and after only 4 treatments her PET Scan showed no evidence of the cancer!! A true miracle! Even though there is no evidence of cancer, this particular type of cancer is infamous for returning with a vengeance, thus requiring Abby to continue with chemo and complete 17 rounds. She finished round 11 on August 22. Chemo treatments have been brutal with fatigue, nausea, weakness, headaches, joint and bone pain, mouth sores, hair loss and over all feeling crummy. Abby has faced this journey with grace, strength, positivity and most importantly with gratitude in her heart for all of the blessings that she has received these last 5 months.
Prior to her diagnosis, Abby was attending Brigham Young University full time majoring in Exercise Science with the goal of continuing on to grad school to become a pediatric physical therapist. When she was diagnosed with cancer it was necessary for Abby to take a leave of absence from school in order to undergo the intense treatments and focus on her health. With only 6 rounds of chemo left, Abby plans to return to BYU to resume her studies for the winter semester that begins in Jan 2026 bringing some normalcy back into her life. When she returns to school, her hair will just be beginning to grow back. She would like to purchase a wig to wear while her hair is growing back until it's at a stage where she can style it. It will take a couple years to get her hair back to where it was prior to diagnosis.
The most natural looking wigs are ones made with real human hair. Abby has been scouring the internet trying to find a wig that matches her hair color and looks natural. These wigs are EXPENSIVE! In addition, real human hair wigs wear out sooner than synthetic wigs, lasting 7-9 months. Because of this, she anticipates needing 2 wigs to get to the point where her own hair is long enough to style.
So many people have been asking how they can heIp her as she goes through this trial and this is one way we can make a huge impact for her. I am hoping we as a community can come together to raise enough money to help Abby purchase 2 wigs to get her through the next year and half as she transitions back to normal college life. These wigs will allow her to feel beautiful and confident as she returns to the grueling schedule of classes. Funding these wigs is one small way we can help Abby on this tough journey and help her feel as beautiful as we all know her to be. Thank you so much for your support.
