H2OpenDoors: Water Education Peace

A little over a year ago students from Woodside High School’s Green Academy in Woodside, California were approached by Jon Kaufman, a member of a local Rotary club and leader of the H2OpenDoors project, to help them bring clean water to foreign countries. Our partnership and fundraising efforts helped raise thousands of dollars and in September of 2014, we were able to bring a SunSpring water purification system to a very poor community in Ciudad Guzman, Mexico. Six students joined members of the Rotary on this mission.
While we were there, we had the amazing opportunity to attend a leadership academy hosted by former president Vicente Fox. He was so impressed with our efforts that he agreed to pay for half of the cost of one SunSpring System!
Woodside High School’s Earth Club has decided to make the global water crisis our main focus. This month we make our partnership with Rotary official in starting up the school’s first Interact club.
Our mission is to return to Mexico this summer to install at least two more water purification systems. Mr. Fox will pay for half of the cost of one of the SunSprings, but we need to raise money for the rest, and it's going to take a lot more than a couple bake sales to do this! Each system costs about $25,000, plus travel expenses for students and one teacher. We want to return because our last trip to Mexico changed our way of thinking. We believe access to clean water is a right – not a privilege for the rich or those lucky enough to be born in the U.S.
Please help Woodside High School’s Earth Club and newly established Interact Club to raise money so that those most in need of clean water can have it. To understand the full benefits of a SunSprings system, go to http://h2opendoors.org/.
Briefly, the SunSpring system can purify over 20,000 liters per day from virtually any contaminated water source. It is solar and wind powered, so it requires no electricity or fuel, and it removes all bacteria, viruses and other contaminants using membrane technology. With a design life of more than 10 years, the system requires only one hour of downtime for simple maintenance procedures each month. Manufactured in Rocky Ford, Colo., by Innovative Water Technologies, the systems are up and running within three hours. H2OpenDoors installed systems around the world, including Thailand, the Philippines, Guatemala and Mexico.
