Help kids with mobility disabilities get moving!
Go Baby Go! is a national, community-based research, design and outreach program that provides modified ride-on cars to young children with disabilities so they can move around independently. That’s right, kids between the ages of 0-3 get their very own vehicle to get them moving!
In 2018, Laing Middle School of Science and Technology in Mount Pleasant SC started a partnership with Go Baby Go! and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Team members of MUSC Department of Rehabilitative Sciences identify the children and their specific needs. Then they reach out to Dr. Mel Goodwin, STEM Coach at Laing Middle School, with information about each child so he can create a plan for the vehicle modifications.
During recess and before and after school, Laing Middle School students volunteer their time and commitment to learn how to modify and outfit off-the-shelf ride-on cars to suit each individual child’s situation.
Seeing the smiles on the faces of these children and their caregivers is reward enough! Now, we want to expand our reach throughout South Carolina, and make modified vehicles available to every child between the age of 0 to 3 who needs one.
Our target is to launch our expanded initiative this fall with a highly visible event that will showcase the students creating modified vehicles, and working with our MUSC partners to put them in the hands of disabled children. With $5,000, we will impact the lives of 24 children in an incredible life-altering way.
Please help us end adaptive play barriers in South Carolina. Donate now to support the efforts of middle-school students to help young children with mobility disabilities through modified ride-on cars!
