Who We Are
This summer, 12 people from all around the world came together in the Inyo Mountains in Eastern California for nearly 5 weeks of intensive guide training with the School of Lost Borders (SOLB). Learning to cultivate self-trust, responsibility, and understanding about ones' unique place within the world through nature based connection and ceremony. Our practice builds positive relationships between all and neutralizes hierarchical dynamics fostered by inequality of status, race, economic stature or other social factors.

Our Story
On June 23rd, 2016, four of our participants were driving back to basecamp from holding ceremony up in the ancient Bristlecone pines when the brakes of their car went out. As you can imagine, this was very scary given the steep, curvy downhill road they were traversing at the time. Gratefully, those ancient bristle cones are ancient for a good reason, they are sturdy and strong – able to hold this car from careening further over the edge and to a possible injury or worse for its passengers.

Sam and the Silver Steed
This beloved car, who held our people so safe, belonged to Sam – one of our guide assistants. Sam made his way to the Owens Valley in 2006, when he was just 16, seeking community through the SOLB Youth Rite of Passage program which forever changed his life and who he is in the world today. Something sleeping inside him, like in all of us, woke up and he continues to this day to be fed by the ceremony and connection with the natural world.
In Sam’s words he says: “The schools work of wilderness based rites of passage has helped me feel at home on this earth, find strength and reflection in the natural rhythms and phenomena of our environment, and connected me with groups of people who are listening for who we are and how we are to be. I have been gifted with the humility of fasting alone in the desert, the grandeur of staying up all night and watching the sun rise, and the deep fulfillment of hearing people’s stories".

Our Community
While we are incredibly grateful that no one was injured, we are all very sad that Sam’s car was totaled in this accident. Given that we are a community and we believe none of us are whole until all of us are whole, we seek to help Sam raise the remaining funds necessary to enable him to get back on his feet. We estimate that this amount is approximately $3,000 so we are seeking that amount for this fund raiser. Any raised funds above and beyond this will be donated to the School of Lost Borders in the form of a scholarship for future vision fast participants.
