More and more women with their children stand at the roadsides bearing white flags which can also be seen hanging outside houses. This is a signal to humanitarian organisations that families are in dire need of food. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, families cannot work and are increasingly struggling to find food. They don't know how they will survive in the weeks to come.
Like the majority of the population, the indigenous earn their living through casual labour and in the informal sectors, earning only enough to survival. Currently, they are not allowed to work. They have no income and no state support.
Indigenous communities cannot live by Covid-19 hygiene guidelines. They do not have enough soap or access to clean water. Many do not have their own homes, as they live and work on the plantations of large landowners. As a result they cannot self-isolate and practice socially distancing.
Your donations will provide families with food packages and sanitation kits.
A food package for €40 consists of corn, beans, oil, rice, salt and sugar and will help a family of five to keep reasonably nourished for two weeks.
A hygiene kit for €40 with soap, washing powder, chlorine, washable masks and washable plastic brushes will help a family protect themselves during this crisis.
We know that these are difficult times for everyone and we greatly appreciate any donation large or small that people are in a position to make, in order to support these indigenous families. We are all in this together.
