~ Calling all Friends of White Buffalo Spirit ~
Longtime resident and friend of Pittsboro, Michael McCormick, aka the Bishop of Pittsboro, needs our help.
Michael was recently diagnosed with cancer in his neck. Since early March he has been undergoing many tests and doctor visits at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
On April 1, he will begin an arduous treatment involving seven weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as several months of recovery.
Michael has been suffering from Spinocerebellar ataxia since 1985.
Spinocerebellar ataxia is degenerative disabling condition which makes him unable to work or do many things most of us take for granted. He has been dependant on social services for many years. He has very little income and in normal circumstances makes ends meet but he is now faced with great challenges - physically, emotionally and financially.
Michael needs dental care for problems which will likely be exacerbated by the cancer treatments. Medicaid doesn’t cover dental expenses.
He will also need things to help him get through the treatment which his limited income does not allow for such as a Water Pic, electric toothbrush and an electric shaver.
This GoFundMe campaign for Michael is seeking to raise $4000.00 for his extra expenses during and after cancer treatment. His doctors stressed the urgency of the treatment so Michael needs these funds immediately.
In addition Michael needs help and support as he makes this challenging journey. He needs all of us to be positive and focus on living and loving when we talk to him and visit him.
The main thing he needs from us physically now are rides to Chapel Hill for his treatments, Monday through Friday from April 1, 2019, for seven weeks. Later, he will also need friends checking on him as the treatment progresses to make sure he’s all right and has enough to eat, running errands, doing laundry and doing his grocery shopping.
