I have decided to raise money through a charity cycle for two charities that I feel strongly about Roar for Ruari and the Irish Refugee Council. My aim is to cycle from Whister to Banff while just living off my bike. Leaving on June 13th and taking roughly two weeks. This is a 1200 km journey with a 12,500m elevation climb over two mountain ranges, the Coast moutains and the Rockies. That equates to the length of Ireland twice and climbing the height of Everest 1.5 times. I have done no cycling training other than a few mountain bike trails so this should be interesting. I am also riding through grizzly bear country solo which hasn't settled my mothers nerves.
Roar for Ruari is a very local cause and one in which my home community of Clane has come together to help and support. Many are aware of the story behind Roar for Ruairi but for those of you who aren’t, Ruairi is a 6 year old boy from Clane who has been diagnosed with a very rare degenerative and life-limiting neurological condition. The aim of this fundraiser is raise funds for home developments for Ruairi and his family. Any help and relief that I can add to Ruari and his family is my pleasure so please help if you can.
The Irish Refugee Council is the other cause I fell extremely passionate about. It addresses the national issue of direct provision, which I feel is something we as Irish people have ignored for quite some time. As a nation we pride ourselves on how friendly and kind we are, yet we have been very ignorant to the topic. These are not people that have come to take your jobs and cause tension. These are people who have come from poverty and war in which they have fled in search of safety. In many cases they have come from situations that we as a first world nation cannot even comprehend. For us to basically lock these people away in terrible run down facilities is something which I think we as a nation will be very ashamed to look back on in years to come. I think it's time for change.
I really hope you can lend a helping hand to these two charities. I would really appreciate it.
