Two dogs. Two broken legs. One mission - to save them all.
Whisper
When a contact in Mexico contacted us about sweet Whisper, our hearts broke for the pain this little girl must be in. This girl was found along a sweltering black highway, more than likely thrown from a car. When she was found, Whisper was only about 8lbs, practically skin and bones. When we were asked to help dear Whisper our hearts broke knowing the pain this girl was suffering from with no relief in sight. Labs and More was already busting at the seams with medical dogs and their related costs. We didn't know where we would put her to recover or how we would pay for her care, but feared the worst would happen if we didn't make room for this little angel. We agreed to take Whisper in and she was transported to Labs and More. Our fears about Whisper were realized, as infection had already started to set in on her leg. X-rays also showed a severe femur break in multiple locations. As if that wasn’t enough for this poor girl to endure, she was also anemic with a blood disorder – making this surgery life-threatening. Our veterinary partners knew the severity of the situation. We weighed our options for Whisper and we decided to give her a chance. This girl is a fighter and even against all those odds, she survived! Whisper is now home recovering with a skilled foster family. Her leg has been rebuilt. Even though she isn’t out of the woods she is no longer suffering. Her prognosis moving forward is hopeful.
Pacer
Just one day later, we received an urgent immediate rescue need from a shelter hours away of a youngster. At only 6 months old, Pacer was dumped at the shelter with his back leg severely broken and unusable. We were told he was more than likely thrown out of a car and tried to run after his family as they drove away and was hit by another car. What are the odds of two dogs tossed out on the highway in two days? How could we say yes to Whisper and no to Pacer? This depressed but kind boy was in a world of pain, and he was on his last hours of life. Yes, sadly the shelter told us he only had until the end of the day. We rushed to get Pacer. Pacer was transferred directly to Labs and More and underwent immediate surgery to repair the fracture. His leg was also infected, but we were able to save it! Our wonderful veterinary partners used screws and plates to help repair and stabilize Pacer's growing leg so it would serve him for many years to come. Who can turn their back on a sweet boy like Pacer? We sure couldn’t. We hope you won’t either.
We need your help!
You couldn't have driven by one of these dogs and turned your back, and neither could we. You are why we said yes when asked to lend a helping hand. We know the community of friends who support Labs and More will come together again to give us the means to pay for the astronomical medical bills and recovery care for these two deserving dogs. Being mixed breed and injured is not a good combination for being saved from shelters, and Whisper and Pacer had no other way out. We are able to take in medical needs dogs like Whisper and Pacer because of the generosity of our wonderful supporters. You give our volunteers the tools to do this life saving and compassionate work that others, for many reasons, turn away from. Please donate to Whisper and Pacer's medical needs fundraiser as you are able, and please share so that others may do the same. Each donation helps make a difference, and as a 501(c)3 your donation can be considered tax deductible. Donations can be made here online through this GoFundMe page and come directly to our organization. If you would prefer to send a check, checks may be mailed to: California Labradors, Retrievers, and More Rescue, 5425 Oberlin Drive, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92121. From all of us here at Labs and More, we thank you for your commitment to helping us say yes to dogs in need. Your donation means life to those who cannot help themselves. Thank you for your donation today!
