WHILE SHE STILL CAN

Featured in the photo is my 43-year-old daughter Carrie, who had the misfortune to inherit a rare gene from her dad, who passed the day after his 43rd birthday from Early Onset Alzheimer's. Also in the picture is her brother Bryan, who also inherited the rare gene and passed on April 4, 2024, at the age of 44.

They both have given their all in hopes of helping researchers find the answers that can stop this horrific gene from taking others. For the past 14 years, they participated in research and drug trials. Carrie continues her participation.

Her progression with Alzheimer's is becoming more apparent as each day passes. Her 3 children are alarmed at the changes they are seeing: confusion, forgetfulness, isolation, and lack of interest in things that once gave her pleasure.

I did a GoFundMe for Bryan so he could swim with sharks, which had been a lifelong dream. Thanks to the generosity of the GoFundMe community, we were able to make his dream a reality.

I am now hoping to raise enough money to take Carrie to Portugal. She has asked to go for her 44th birthday on June 19th, a birthday she never thought she would celebrate. You see, we have lost 7 family members from the ages of 37 to 44 to this rare Alzheimer's gene. This type of Alzheimer's hits our family at a young age and is very aggressive. Time is not our friend. Carrie wants to see the country her grandmother (my mother) came from. She wants to learn more about her Portuguese heritage. Getting this trip funded is crucial to fulfilling her wish.
