How can a mother explain the unimaginable to a 6 year old, a 4 year old and a 6 month old baby? Even little children know when to expect their dad home from work, and Katty and Rodrigo’s kids were crying. How could Katty reassure them when things are not ok? All she could say was that he was not coming home tonight.
On the morning of August 20, Rodrigo and his work partner stopped by the WaWa on Route 1 to pick up some breakfast on their way to work. He was seized by ICE and is now in detention.
Rodrigo and his wife Katty have been together for seven years and have three children, all too young to understand why their dad disappeared so suddenly. The oldest is starting first grade with no father to help send her off for her first day. The baby is six months old.
He is a contractor, doing electrical work and plumbing, laying floors, remodeling bathrooms and kitchens. He likes basketball. Katty has been working to care for the three kids at home. On the weekends they go to church and spend time together as a family. Rodrigo likes playing with the kids and takes them to the park. Their life in Silver Spring has been modest, unremarkable to others. But they have come far from their lives in Guatemala to establish stable lives and create their family.
Suddenly, he is gone and nothing is the same. Katty has no income. She has lost his company and his emotional support. Despite her perilous and vulnerable situation, Katty is determined, resolute, and hopeful, prepared to do what she can to facilitate her husband’s release. She has learned where he is, and will be tracking any transfers. Rodrigo has met with a lawyer, who will file a habeas petition, and his boss will make the first payment. There is a much higher likelihood of securing release before people are moved farther away. But the cost of legal representation will be substantial, and she needs to pay $3,000 by September 4. On top of that, he needs $4,000 to file bond.
Please help ensure we bring Rodrigo home before he is moved out of state by assisting with the legal fees required to fight for his release. In addition, Katty needs financial help with her rent and utilities, her car payment and insurance, food and diapers for her children. Even a small contribution will help Katty and her family stay afloat while she works to free her husband. If you cannot give money, please share this fundraiser with others you know.
