Where do dances come from and what role does dance play in the community as groups come together around dance? My documentary, "Where Dances Come From" will follow three dance makers in Iowa from audition to performance in 2020.
Valerie Williams is a choreographer working from Ames Iowa. With decades of experience choreographing for her company Co'Motion Dance Theater, schools, musicals and her ongoing project "Women In Motion," Valerie is a true change maker for the arts in Iowa.
LD Kidd, a tap, jazz, modern and hip hop choreographer in Eastern Iowa teaches at Nolte Academy in Iowa City and has run his own dance nonprofit in Cedar Rapids. He also teaches for Ballet Quad Cities, the University of Iowa and choreographs for area schools.
Iowa Dance Theatre is a second generation non profit bringing ballet and tap dance performance to the Des Moines area, putting on four shows per year through a collaboration between more than 35 area dance schools and academies. It's Nutcracker and Dracula performances are some of the groups most anticipated shows annually.
I'll follow the three to create a document of the work they and their students and participants engage with and make meaning from dance. With interviews, improvisations, rehearsals and dance class footage, this documentary is sure to engage audiences around dance in Iowa.
This feature length production will meet broadcast standards and when complete, will be submitted to Iowa Public Broadcasting as well as area film festivals to bring the story of dance to the community.
Funds are to cover hard drives, high data rate media cards, fuel, food and hotel for weekend travel to Des Moines, Ames and Iowa City from February through December on more than 20 trips throughout the year.
