My name is Sarah, and my husband was diagnosed with his first malignant brain tumor at the age of 32; two months before we were going to be married. The tumor returned 5 years later, and then returned for a third time in March of 2017. During these 10 years, we had 4 children, Tyler worked and I started a business; we continued to live. He went through his third surgery and the "good news" was that it was still only stage 3 astrocytoma. But a few months after his surgery, his recovery took a turn and the following October the tumor returned as stage 4 glioblastoma; incurable and inoperable. It's the worst of the worst. It creates its own blood supply, and there is nothing that can be done to stop it.
Even though Tyler was well over the last 13 years, having cancer as an unwanted passenger in our lives for 13 years has not come without its trials and tribulations. Frustrated by the lack of support in online communities, I decided to start a podcast that talks about the raw and real emotions that come with being a caregiver/spouse to someone with a terminal illness in hopes to help others in similar situations feel less alone on an island -- to help them understand that the frustration, the sadness, the sheer panic of the thought of losing someone causes all sorts of emotions.
My podcast, When Shit Gets Real, is a candid discussion about when your life gets swept out from under you and you go from partner to caretaker. I will be interviewing other caretakers and asking them to tell their stories as well. I believe that emotional help for the caretakers is crucial, and that is my goal; to offer support. At this point I have recorded 9 episodes and have more cohosts lined up to share their personal stories of how they coped, or maybe didn't, with this tremendously hard journey of being a caregiver. My mission in doing the podcast is not to make money, it's to help people. However all costs that come along with recording a show are self funded at this point. I feel very passionate about this endevour and want to keep recording episodes, but I can't continue to do so without asking for financial help. If you're in a position to help, please consider donating. Any amount is appreciated and helpful. And if not, I hope that my podcast can help you.
I am waiting on final editing to finish up to launch the podcast, but in the meantime you can visit my website https://www.Whenshitgetsreal.net
