ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY
A beautiful story of animal resistance and human solidarity.
In June 2021, a pig escaped from a farm in Nottinghamshire and gave birth to ten piglets shortly after in the woods. After a dog walker spotted them, and thanks to a great collaborative effort by Brinsley Animal Rescue, The Surge Sanctuary, animal rights activists, and members of the public, the pig family was eventually saved.
When Pigs Escape recounts the campaign to save Matilda and her piglets, and focuses on their lives after being rescued by Brinsley Animal Rescue and The Surge Sanctuary. The documentary records the events that followed their rescue, giving centre stage to Matilda and her piglets through an observational approach and minimalistic narration.
Your donation to this crowdfund will allow us to pay for the production costs, deliver a documentary's promotional campaign, and release the complete film in summer 2022. We will also organise charitable screenings where all raised funds will go to the sanctuaries involved in Matilda’s rescue.

This is a not-for-profit crowdfund towards the production costs and the promotion campaign of When Pigs Escape, a documentary about the story of Matilda, a pig who attracted worldwide attention after escaping from a farm to give birth to ten piglets in the woods.
Because of the nature of the story, the idea for this documentary began suddenly and without a budget or economic support. The production costs have been kept to a minimum thanks to the help of many individuals and because most of the gear was already owned by the filmmaker. However, there have been inevitable expenses related to transport, equipment rental, other purchases, or stock footage licensing.
WHY THIS DOCUMENTARY
When Pigs Escape offers the audience an opportunity to see pigs for who they are, so we can change how we behave towards them.
Most people rarely have the opportunity to interact with pigs positively and respectfully, with animal sanctuaries being the exception. At the same time, our primary relationship with pigs is breeding and killing them for human use, and on the rare occasions when we see them alive, they are either exploited in farms or in trucks on the way to the slaughterhouse. This documentary attempts to contribute to the collective effort to change this situation by showing us pigs for who they are.

Your donation will be used directly towards the documentary to help with the production costs and promotion of the documentary. Your donation will not be used as a wage or salary – the filmmaker is volunteering that time and work. Below is a summary of the production costs and the initial budget to promote the documentary:

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Jusep is a photographer and videographer whose work focuses on animal rights issues. He collaborates with animal sanctuaries, campaigning animal rights organisations, and grassroots groups. When Pigs Escape is his first documentary, premiering in summer 2022.
SUSTAINABILITY STATEMENT
To minimise the environmental impact of the production, we took the following actions:
- Cycling and public transport were the primary means of transport used (over 90% of total miles).
- The cast and crew were fed vegan food and treats.
- When possible, second-hand equipment was used, purchased or borrowed.
