I never imagined I would ever have to write anything like this, but watching someone you care about suffer so deeply changes everything and leaves you searching for any way to help.
My ex-husband, Dan Bouska, is facing a devastating battle with cancer that has completely altered his life. Over the past year, he has undergone surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Despite aggressive treatment, his condition has continued to bring serious complications, and doctors have described him as a very complex and unusual medical case.
While his medical team cannot put a clear life expectancy on him, they can say that he is living with intense, daily pain that has been extremely difficult to control. The possibility that this could be his new normal has been heartbreaking to face.
For months now, he has endured hours of severe pain each day. He has tried numerous medications and treatment approaches with limited relief. When the pain and symptoms become overwhelming, he often requires hospitalization for stabilization, only to return home and begin the cycle again.
Although insurance does cover in-home wound care, many other essential services are not covered at this time, including personal care assistance, help with daily living tasks, housekeeping, and basic home support. A pain pump is being pursued and may eventually be covered by insurance, but only after every other option has been exhausted.
At the same time, we are actively exploring options for him to temporarily stay in a rehabilitation facility or skilled nursing facility, as it has become nearly impossible for him to safely care for himself alone at home. These facilities typically cost between $5,000 and $10,000 per month, and insurance coverage is limited. We are also having difficult but necessary conversations about hospice care, as he increasingly requires around-the-clock medical support to remain safe and comfortable.
Because of his condition and the requirements of applying for disability, he is currently unable to work or drive. With no income and ongoing medical and household expenses, he is struggling to keep up with even the most basic financial obligations.
This loss of independence has been especially difficult because of who he is at his core. He has always been an extremely hard worker—deeply dedicated, reliable, and passionate about the work he does. Hockey has been a defining part of his life, and over the years he has worked with numerous organizations and teams, forming lasting friendships and earning the respect of players, colleagues, and peers alike. Being unable to work, contribute, and stay connected to that world has been emotionally devastating for him.
Beyond the physical pain, the emotional and mental toll has been profound.
He spends most days alone at home, unable to care for himself in ways he once could. Tasks many of us take for granted—showering, preparing food, standing long enough to get a glass of water—require tremendous effort and are often followed by long recovery periods. Over time, this has led to deep loneliness, frustration, and a growing sense of helplessness.
Living with constant pain, repeated hospitalizations, and uncertainty has worn him down emotionally. The isolation and loss of independence have created significant mental strain, and some days simply finding the strength to get through the day feels overwhelming.
This fundraiser exists to help bridge the gap between what insurance provides and what he truly needs—not just to survive, but to maintain dignity, safety, and emotional well-being during an incredibly difficult time.
Funds raised will be used for:
• Non-covered in-home care and personal assistance
• Rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility costs
• Household and daily living support
• Transportation and basic expenses
• Financial stability while disability is pending
With the right support in place, there is hope for greater stability—fewer crises, better pain management, and the ability to face each day with a little more comfort and dignity. Even small improvements could make a meaningful difference in both his physical well-being and emotional outlook.
Any donation, share, or message of support is deeply appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for helping in any way you can.
With heartfelt thanks,
