When a car hits a motorcyclist: Reuben's Story

Donation protected
My name is Erin and I'm fundraising for my brother-in-law, Reuben. On November 7th, Reuben was taking his motorcycle to storage for the winter. As he was going through an intersection, a car turned into the intersection and hit him broadside. He was resuscitated at the scene. He was taken to Regions Hospital, where the trauma team worked to keep him alive. Here's some of what they found: all ribs on the left side were broken in multiple places, his spleen was bleeding and had to be removed, kidneys were damaged, broken shoulder, broken collar bone, collar bone dislodged from his sternum, collapsed lung, broken orbital bones on both sides, brain bleeding and swelling, etc. Reuben underwent two emergency surgeries within hours of coming into the hospital, to stop the internal bleeding in his abdomen and the bleeding in his brain. Since that first day, Reuben has had at least 10 more surgeries, with more to come. Currently, his abdomen is still open, they are unable to close it due to swelling and damage and he is still on a ventilator, as his lungs are not strong enough to do his breathing.

Two weeks have passed since this accident and Reuben is still in ICU fighting. Fighting to breathe. Fighting to heal. Fighting to be Reuben again. As the saying goes "bad things happen to good people", but Reuben is truly one of the best. He is a caring, dedicated, generous man who now needs us to be there for him, after he's been there for us for so long. Reuben and his wife Julie work hard. They work hard to provide for themselves and their children. They work hard so they can give to others. It's our turn to work hard for them.

It's no surprise that medical bills are quickly adding up. And Reuben will be out of work for quite some time. Julie would like to be at the hospital with her husband, especially while he remains in the ICU. This means that two incomes are now paused. However, there is no pause button for the household bills and such that keep rolling in no matter what the circumstances. Even though Reuben and Julie's world has been flipped upside down, the rest of the world keeps turning like normal. Finances and bills should be the last thing this family needs to worry about right now. Can you help lighten their load?
