Alex Gonsalves was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) on February 23, 2012 at the age of 37. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As Alex's nerves died, he lost all muscle function. It is very rare to be diagnosed at such a young age, as in Alex's case. Alex has been married to his wife Melissa for 16 years and has two young teenage children; Xander and Julia. He was always a very hands on father who supported his kids in everything. Alex was also an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and working in his yard. ALS took away both of those hobbies very early on. Alex is now wheelchair bound and unable to actively support his kids in their chosen activities and sports. This fundraising campaign will help the family attain their goal of purchasing a wheelchair accessible vehicle so they are able to get Alex out of the house and back to being the involved, supportive father and husband that he would have been had he not been diagnosed with ALS.
